Upselling PART 4: How to Pick Gift Wrapping Paper & Gift Wrap KITS - DIY vs Premade Based on Cost and Profit

Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 3rd Apr 2020

The easiest way to make more money is to upsell the buyers that you already have.  In the previous parts of this article we discussed what Upsells arehow to pick the right papergift bags for gift wrapping and now we will go over everything you need to know about Gift Wrapping Paper and Kits.  Lets get started!

KEEP IN MIND: The Upsell is NOT your inventory. You already made your money off this buyer when they chose to make a purchase; your only goal now is for them to give you an extra $1 - $4. The cheaper you offer your upsells, the more upsells you will sell! And even though $2 sounds like "nothing", when you upsell it 1,000 times, you made an extra $2,000 for basically nothing!

(And, don't worry, I will do all of the math for you in this article)

As we previously discussed, most online sellers that offer gift wrap do not actually "wrap" the present. Instead they insert the supplies needed to gift wrap into the outgoing parcel which saves the buyer time and money.  However if you do want to offer actual wrapping, this is typically an additional upsell charge. With that in mind, if you want to offer actual "DIY" wrapping paper (and a bow, of course) you will need to make your own gift wrap "kits" or, take a short cut and just buy premade Gift Wrap Kits.  So first let's discuss kits that you can buy that are ready to sell.

GIFT WRAP KITS

American Greetings; 12 Sheets, 100sq ft.  These 12 sheets can wrap up to 24 shirt boxes, so even if your buyer makes a mistake they will have plenty of extra paper to redo the wrapping.  This kit is under $12 on Amazon, so your cost would be $1 per buyer.  Let's say you add-on a bow which costs you an additional 20-cents; your total cost for a premium gift wrap kit is only $1.25.  You can offer this kit at only $2.50-$2.99 and upsell a ton of them - thats over 100% profit!!

And look how gosh darn nice these look (cards and bows not included):

American Greetings also offers a Christmas variation of this kit.  This kit is only $10.49 for 12 sheets:

There are also kits like the one shown below that is manufactured by WRAPAHOLIC. This one is so cool!

The Wrapaholic kit is one roll that has the six unique prints on it.  You have to cut them out, but you still end up with 6 total styles. These are 6 pieces for $9.99 but OMG they're so cool. If you go with this awesome paper your cost per customer will be $1.67 before the cost of a bow and gift tag. Let's assume the cost is going to come in at $1.95 total.

Or, for the same price, there are also AMAZING KRAFT Paper Kits (this is sooooooo adorable!!! I love the Cactus Print!).

Or how about dogs and cats:

If you don't like the quirky prints, there are also Kraft kits with "regular" patterns:

So you have to decide, do you want to go with the more generic-looking Hallmark pre-cut kits for $1 or do you want to have more pizzazz and cut the paper yourself for a super unique look? A unique paper will get a higher upsell price, but it will cost TIME. Whereas a generic paper is ready-to-ship but will sell at a lesser price.

DIY WRAPPING PAPER KITS

If you would rather make your own wrapping paper kits, I would highly suggest first ordering one of the kits shown above so you can see how they ship it, how they package it and use it as a template to make your own kits.

Making your own kits is going to save you some money but also cost time. So; invest more time = more profit per upsell.  The question is, is the time investment cutting the paper worth the extra money?  That is something you will have to decide. If you are hard-up for cash, this might be a great option for you

First you will need to pick the type of paper you want to make your kits from:

COMMON GLOSSY WRAPPING PAPER

Common Wrapping Paper always looks nice on presents:

The paper shown above is $25 for all.  That means you get 6 Rolls that are each 12 FEET long (x30" wide). If you want to cut them into sheets that are the same size as the KRAFT paper shown above, you will be cutting them to approximately 30"x17".  Since the roll of paper is 30" wide, we have that measurement already covered.  Now all we have to do is unroll the paper and cut it every 17" (or, be generous and cut it every 24" / 2 Feet).  If we decide to go the generous route and cut every 2 feet, we will get 6 pieces PER ROLL.  That means we will get 6 pieces per roll x 6 total rolls = 36 individual gift wrap kits for $25; this makes each kit approximately $0.78 per piece.

DOUBLE SIDED  (AKA: Reversible)

FOIL WRAPPING PAPER:  Foil wrap is *USUALLY* the most expensive type of wrapping paper, but also the most impressive!  This insanely awesome pink color foil wrapping paper (shown below) is $18.95 for 16.5 feet.  It also comes in blue, gold, red, pearl and more!

If you were to go with this incredible textured foil (shown above) and if you cut your paper every 24", you would be able to make 8 kits per roll with some extra scrap.  If you changed your measurements to cutting every 18" (instead of 24") you would get exactly 11 kits per roll which would decrease your cost to $1.73 per kit. If you add on a bow you'll probably come in a hair under $2.

Holographic wrapping papers are over double the price, so your paper would probably come to $3.75 per kit, but Oh Man, it is so totally bad ass! The added coolness justifies asking $5.99 for gift wrapping with this level of Ultra Premium Paper:

"KRAFT" PAPER is the cheapest way to go if you are looking at financials.  The KRAFT shown below is 200 FEET for $15.89.  If we cut the paper every 24" (2 Feet) we get 100 KITS!  Thats only 16 CENTS per kit. You can add on jute ribbon or lace ribbon and an awesome die-cut gift tag and still come in at $1 or less.

PRINTED KRAFT PAPER:  This is going to run around $0.33-$0.35 cents per kit.  The paper shown below is under $0.34 cents for a bunch of different patterns.

FOIL GRAPHIC KRAFT PRINTED PAPER.  More expensive than the printed KRAFT, but not as expensive as traditional wrapping paper.

Whether you want to make your own kits or buy pre-made kits, my all-time-fav wrapping paper make is "WRAPAHOLIC" on Amazon. Check out their listings! If you're looking for AMAZING wrapping papers at great prices, you will love "WRAPAHOLIC".

CONSIDERATIONS:

Are your gift wrapped products going to require boxes in addition to paper?  If the products you see already come boxed or don't require a box, then wrapping paper is great!  If you have to also add on a box (and a bow) you will have to raise the price of your Gift Wrapping Option upsell.

IF you do not want to invest in boxes, paper and bows, you can consider going the bag-with-bow-and-tissue route or you can take a look at Printed Boxes that do not require paper wrapping.

Think about the cost of your bows, gift tags, ribbon or other items you plan to use to gift wrap.
