How to Respond to “Can You Give Me a Bigger Discount? It's Too Expensive!"

Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 31st Aug 2020

It’s one of the most frustrating questions; “Will you take LESS for it?”... this question can put a sour expression on your face with a quickness. Especially when you already have it priced super low and you’re already making little profit. So, today I am going to tell you how to respond to this question, without losing a potential buyer.

There’s a couple things you need to think about when you get this question:

1. The buyer has no idea what you paid, so they have no idea that they are insulting you and your hard work

2. The buyer just wants it as cheap as possible. It likely has never occurred to them that you bought it, spent time photographing it, listing it, now you’re spending even more time corresponding with their stupid questions, then you’re going to pay more fees when it sells and you ship.

3. It is absolutely, positively possible that the buyer has every intention on paying your full asking price but figured they would see if they could get it even cheaper. Hey, you can’t knock their hustle, right?

4. With that in mind, instead of screaming at someone for offending you, reply with courtesy because, as mentioned, they are clearly interested in the item and may be trying to sniff out an added discount but this doesn’t mean they won’t pay your full price.

The best way to respond is to instead highlight the VALUE they are getting. For example, here at BigBrandWholesale.com we remind people that we:

  • Ship for FREE inside the USA
  • Ship Same Day (M-F, orders received before 12pm EST)
  • Tracking and Insurance is FREE
  • Our prices are already a massive discount off retail
  • We offer a totally free Loyalty Program
  • We also take the time to video every single Lot, so you know exactly what you are buying

I have discovered that usually all it takes is just to explain the value of what they are considering purchasing to “seal the deal”. Life is hectic and often people overlook the SERVICE they are getting. So if you are super polite, cheerful and reply honestly, that is usually what’s needed to get them to click “BUY NOW”. On the other hand, if you rip their head off and tell them “I PAID $12 FOR IT AND I’M ONLY ASKING $19! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU???! RUDE!!” you can safely assume they will go elsewhere and pay $23 if needed, simply to avoid YOU.

BUT, there are also the people who have no intention at all of buying anything, unless you “pay them to take it”. That’s what we call it here, in our warehouse, when people want us to sell them authentic Gucci for $2. Yes, I’m totally serious. Then these same people will say “But I will buy 2 MILLION pieces if you can do $2 each” - Dude, if we sold you two million Guccis at $2 each we would be losing 45 million+ to “make” 4 million? HARD PASS… that’s the most asinine, insulting crap ever!

IN CLOSING,

I would encourage you to type out a nice reply (when you're in a good mood, preferably) and save it where you can easily copy and paste it. If you reply from your cell phone a lot, create a “memo” and save it on your phone. Then, when someone asks for a discount, just copy and paste. This removes all emotion from it.

Here’s an example of a copy-and-paste reply you can use:

Hi! Thank you so much for reaching out! We are not able to lessen the price on this item but don’t forget that we ship FOR FREE, ship FAST, pack all merchandise securely, provide FREE tracking and insurance and, as you can see, we reply to all inquiries super quick! We look forward to doing business with you! Have a wonderful day!”
