Amazon & eBay ALTERNATIVE: Overstock.com - A Site for Selling Liquidations
Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 15th Apr 2020
If you’re looking for another alternative to eBay, Overstock.com is definitely a contender to consider! Let's investigate!
TRAFFIC LEVELS
Overstock.com get about 28 million visitors a month. For comparison,
- Walmart has 469 million visitors a month
- Poshmark has 42 million
- Sears comes in at 18 million.
- Depop (5.8 million) and Bonanza (5.4 million) are almost tied
- And Jet.com has almost 1.5 million
So Overstock easily beats out Sears.com but doesn’t come close to the heavy-hitters (Amazon and eBay which are in the BILLIONS and Walmart that is at 469 million)
With that being said, you can’t roll your eyes at 28 MILLION visitors a month! That’s still a LOT of traffic! In fact, Overstock.com is the 46th largest marketplace in the WORLD. Not bad, eh? Check out the full list of the top 150 marketplaces in the world here.
One thing that is cool about Overstock is that they welcome NEW Liquidations (nothing used is allowed). Overstock.com's liquidations page is specifically designed to sell slow-moving inventory. It focuses on driving traffic toward end-of-life, closeout and excess in-line products to help you clear out items! Woo hoo! Check out Overstock.com’s Liquidation Clothing page here
Other categories you can sell in include:
- Home
- Bed and bath
- Jewelry and watches
- Electronics and media
- Health and beauty
- Sports, hobbies and toys
- Apparel
- Baby & Kid Stuff
WHAT SPECIFICALLY SELLS BEST ON OVERSTOCK
The best way of actually knowing what sells is to LOOK for yourself. So, let's take a look at some of the listings currently on Overstock.com's Liquidation Category right now:
IMPORTANT NOTE: There is VERY LITTLE competition on Overstock.com in the “Liquidation Clothing” category. There's like literally a dozen total listings in this specific category. As you can see from looking at the image above, this stuff DOES sell. The umbrella in the upper left has 40 review, the corset under it has 53 reviews. The leggings (top row, center image) have sold at least 8 times and the mens pants under it have sold at least 7 times. With that being said, I wanted to know how long these listings have been up so I looked at the dates on the Corsets reviews and the first review was left in 2015. We can assume this item has sold way more than 53 times because not everyone leaves a review, so let's guess that it has sold 75 total times. If it has sold 75 times in 5 years, that is 15 sales of this one item per year. Really, that's not bad at all for 1 listing.
OTHER PROS
A major pro of Overstock.com is the vast array of payments accept through their site including:
- Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express
- Overstock Store Credit Card
- Overstock Gift Cards
- PayPal
- Progressive Leasing
- Bitcoin
Additionally, Overstock.com is mostly USA buyers. So if you are USA located and don’t want to invest time into international shipping, this is a great marketplace for you. On the other hand, if you are an international seller, you will have to plan on shipping to the USA almost 100% of the time. This can be very exhausting.
One thing that is friggin GREAT about Overstock.com is that they assume full responsibility for fraudulent purchases (chargebacks related to stolen credit card claims).
AMAZON (FBA) WAREHOUSE COMPETITOR…. OVERSTOCK “SUPPLIER OASIS”
Overstock also offers to fill your orders like Amazon warehouse does. Watch their video below:
I have absolutely no idea what the fees and / or costs are associated with the Supplier Oasis but you can request a quote here
GETTING PAID
This is a major pro - when you ship the item(s), payment from Overstock.com directly to your bank account is triggered. So if you are a fast shipper, you will promptly be paid. This is substantially better than Sears.com and faster than Walmart.com
COST OF SELLING ON OVERSTOCK.com
Like Walmart.com, there is no “setup cost” / “store fee” / “profile fee”.
Listing fees are similar to eBay. Most people claim Overstock fees are less than eBay by a tiny bit. Overstock.com listing fees range from 10¢ to $3.15 depending what you are aiming to sell. The final value fees for overstock are 3% for items sold under $25.
The first picture you upload for a product is free of cost, though you can add up to 6 more at a price of 10¢ each.
Upgrading your listing on Overstock is going to run $1-$5 depending which upgrades you want. If you want to get mega-views, you can use the “Featured listing” feature that costs approximately $13.
The good news is that if items don’t land a sale, you can relist them as many times as you want, for free.
PHOTOS
eBay, Bonanza and eBid are totally liberal with product images; pretty much do whatever you want. Walmart is slightly more strict and Overstock is medium-strict with photos. Overstock wants images to be a certain size, which is logical. They also want a white background but some sellers use grey. You'll get all of the details after you register.
REGISTRATION
The overstock registration process is much less intense than other sites. Here's the application:

OUR RATING
Overstock.com is more difficult to rate than other sites because there aren't many sellers in the categories that we specialize in. So, just based on what we have found, we are going to give Overstock.com a soft 4 star. The reason we are giving a soft 4:
- Limited Competition in Liquidations Category
- PROOF, based on reviews, that stuff DOES SELL
- Traffic levels are good. Not as high as "The Big 3" (Amazon, eBay and Walmart), but Overstock still ranks in the Top 50 marketplaces in the world.
- We WOULD give a 5 star, but the data just isn't there
- We can't give a 3-star because, in terms of traffic, it absolutely beats sites like Bonanza
- The application form is reasonable. Sellers don't have to jump through Amazon Basic Hoops to become approved.
- MOST IMPORTANTLY, Overstock.com isn't directly competing with it's liquidation category sellers. Yes, I'm giving you "the evil eye", Amazon!
