4 Reasons Your Mens Clothing Listings Aren’t Selling

Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 2nd Feb 2021

We previously wrote 5 Reasons Your Womens Clothing Listings Arent Selling, so today we are going to dive into Mens Clothing!

If you took the time to read our awesome article about Male Shopping Patterns, you are already ahead of the game! But if you still find yourself with lots of mens merchandise sitting on your shelves instead of being shipped to a happy buyer, here’s 5 reasons why:

There’s nothing “wrong” with the merchandise. EVERYTHING SELLS! I promise you! It ALL sells! So that means there’s only a few things that could be creating the disconnect:

  1. The photos
  2. The description
  3. The Price
  4. Other

Before we can discuss fixing these 4 possibilities, we have to make sure a few things are crystal clear.

Based on endless research, men are nothing like women when it comes to shopping. Men want only two things:

  • Quick
  • Easy

Men do NOT typically price compare. Men do not care about your coupon codes. Men want what works, usually last-minute and they don’t want any fuss or hassle getting it (this includes BUYING it). So, with this in mind, let’s start looking at the 4 potential reasons your mens merch isn’t moving:

Photos - Keep it simple. Men want Quick and Easy. They don’t want to look through your watermarks or slide through a bunch of different screens. Make your primary photo very basic and your other photos can be more complex close-ups and such.

Description - Once again, quick and easy! LESS IS MORE. Keep your most important details at the top of the listing then add other not-so-important details under them. Use bulletpoints instead of paragraphs because it makes reading so much easier (and quicker!). For example, your listing could look like this:

  • Size 34 x 32
  • Dockers Brand, Performance Collection
  • True Grey
  • Pleated Front
  • Stay-Cool Material
  • Comfort Waist
  • Side and Back Pockets
  • Made from Cotton-Polyester Blend
  • Double-Stitched Inseam
  • Made in India
  • Retail: $79.99

Now let’s look at this same list again. The RED highlight is the MOST IMPORTANT details. The Blue is Secondary and Green is of very little importance to most men, but is still useful for a listing.

  • Size 34 x 32
  • Dockers Brand, Performance Collection
  • True Grey
  • Pleated Front
  • Stay-Cool Material
  • Comfort Waist
  • Side and Back Pockets
  • Made from Cotton-Polyester Blend
  • Double-Stitched Inseam
  • Made in India
  • Retail: $79.99

It is absolutely possible that a man can purchase these pants without ever reading past the size because as we already know from our Male Shopping Patterns article, men would rather settle for something than continue looking; a man leaving empty-handed is a sense of defeat! So you need to make your listing the “one stop shop”. So if your listing is filled with “clutter” it’s a major turn-off for most male shoppers. If you want to add more stuff (return policy, shipping info, etc) put it UNDER the least important details of your mens listings.

Price - It is a proven fact that most male shoppers don’t care about the price. As I have said before, my husband refuses to use a coupon. I’m not sure if he forgets he has the coupon for the “Free Bag of Meijer Shredded Cheese” or what his deal is, but he despises coupons… perhaps because a coupon makes the checkout process longer… which brings us to the next point…

Other - Men don’t want a complicated process. They usually do not surf the web for promo codes, they hate coupons, they don’t want to join your mailing list to get 10% off and they absolutely do not want to do work to complete a transaction. With this in mind; look at your listing, your photos, your process…. Is there anything you can do to improve it? If you sell on a site like eBay, there isn’t much you can do to change the process but if you have your own site you absolutely can re-work the site to offer a smoother process.

IN CLOSING, the inventory isn't "bad", the marketplace you are selling on likely isn't "bad".  That only leaves your listing to fix, which is easy!!
