Online Sellers: What to Do if You Refund a Parcel in Transit (USPS)

Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 4th Jan 2021

You’re in panic-mode; a refund has been issued so you don’t have the money so you need to make sure you get your inventory back. Here’s how to do it!

There’s lots of reasons you have to refund a parcel that hasn’t yet arrived to the buyer. A couple reasons include:

  • Slow transit, buyer demands a refund
  • You realized you shipped the wrong item…….ARRRGGGGHHHH!!!
  • Buyer demands to cancel order as soon as it ships
  • Buyer canceled payment, payment didn’t clear
  • Buyer is a scammer and filed a chargeback as soon as it shipped
  • You discovered the buyer likely purchased the order using stolen credit cards (fraud)

Regardless of the reason, you want to make sure the buyer doesn’t get a refund plus your inventory. One important thing to know is that the only REAL WAY to stop transit and have the merchandise returned to you is to pay for it. As of 2021 the cost is around $14. So, if the item you shipped cost less than $14 you have to decide how badly you want it back. However I will give you an alternate idea after I tell you how to get the item back. Here you go:

BEFORE STEP 1: Sign in to your USPS account, or make one. It’s easy and free.

STEP 1: Click here or open this link in a new screen: https://www.usps.com/manage/package-intercept.htm

STEP 2: Scroll down the page to “PARCEL INTERCEPT”:

STEP 3: Enter the tracking number:

STEP 4: Fill out the form. You will need the buyers address:

STEP 5: Pay for the intercept. It is around $14. Usually you get the merchandise back pretty quick because it is returned to you via Priority Mail.

ALTERNATE IDEAS:

If you really, really don’t want to spend $14 or if the item cost less than $14, here’s the only other things you can do:

  1. If the buyer was cool, ask them to please REFUSE delivery. If they can’t be home to refuse the parcel….
  2. If the buyer was a decent person, ask them NOT TO OPEN IT and instead write RETURN TO SENDER on it and put it back in their mailbox with the flag up.
  3. If the buyer wants to keep the merchandise, send them a paypal invoice so they can re-pay since you already refunded them.

Of course the alternate ideas will only work if the buyer is a normal person who isn't a scammer.

NOTE:

Calling the post office and asking them to return it to you. Even if they say “sure”, it will be delivered to the buyer.
