Online Sellers: How to Add YOUR OWN Paper Tag to Clothing GUIDE
Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 11th Feb 2021
This may sound like an odd question, but we are asked this quite frequently actually, specifically when it comes to designer apparel that is missing the paper store tag for one reason or another, so here’s everything you need to know:
If you own it, you can pretty much do whatever you want to it! Many people would rather add their own tag to a garment than to ship it without any tags. On the other hand, some people always remove paper store tags because it’s a helluva lot easier than peeling off clearance stickers. Regardless, if you want to add your own tags here’s a few simple suggestions:
TAGS
Your tag size can be pretty much whatever you want it to be but I would advise you against a tag any larger than a business card (3.5” x 2”). The reason for this is because it’s just a waste of money on your end. There is no advantage to you, as a seller, having a massive card versus having a smaller size card. It all comes down to how you create / design the card, not the size of it.
TAG OPTIONS:
Depending what look you are going for, you can get an “old school” tag like these:
As you can see, these types of tags are mega cheap! Under $6 for 200 pieces, including the rope fasteners. Personally, I do not care for these. I think they look cheap on clothing. In my honest opinion, this style of tag is good for handmade merch.
Or you can print your own tags like these:
These guys are a little more expensive because they run $15 for a pack of 180 tags plus you gotta pay for the ink as well as the fasteners. This is a good option if you have someone in your realm who is an actual designer. Designing it yourself is not the way to go if you have 0 design experience. If you don’t have anyone in your life who is a pro, you can use a website like Fiverr to hire a pro at a dirt cheap cost (as little as $15!!) so you can get a legit tag design that looks like a “real company”. Keep in mind that you will use this design for 3-10 YEARS, so it’s absolutely worth $15 or even $50.
Or you can even get your own tags printed (I highly recommend UPrinting.com because they’re my #1 source for custom prints, however you will need to first design it or have someone design it for you. We can discuss this more in a different blog post). On most sites these are called “HANG TAGS”:
On UPrinting you can pick your Hang Tag size and shape. As far as price goes, a rectangle tag like the one shown below will run you $30 for 250pc tags (12-cents each) that are about the size of an actual business card:
BUT, it’s barely more expensive to get 1,000 tags (only $47 = 5 cents each) or even 5,000 tags ($167 = 3 cents each). And if ya just want a mega small quantity, you can buy as little as 25 tags for $0.64 cents each (=$15.94)
If you really, really want to get creative you can opt for a wood hang tag:
Or a chalkboard hang tag:
Or even a “metal rim key tag”:
GRAPHICS
If you're going with a blank tag, the easiest thing to do is to have a sticker printed and apply the sticker because, quite frankly, handwritten tags take forever, aren’t consistent and look crappy unless you have the most amazing handwriting of all time. For this I absolutely recommend VistaPrint BECAUSE they offer a DIY sticker designer with really fantastic premade templates that will make your stickers look mega pro:
They seriously have an incredible assortment of FREE templates, ranging from super basic to really fancy:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure if you EVER order ANYTHING through VistaPrint you sign up for (FREE) MrRebates.com because you’ll get awesome CASH BACK with NO CASHOUT AMOUNT!!!
As of today (2-10-21) Mr.Rebates is giving 4% cash back plus coupons. You can cashout your Mr.Rebates cash back as much as you want but payments are made in a lump sum on the 1st of each month. I prefer PayPal payments but they do offer other options. I have made almost $24,000 CASH BACK since 2009!
OTHER ALTERNATIVES:
If you don’t want to pay for stickers or custom printing, you can opt for a literal stamp, just make sure you get SELF INKING… because they’re amazing and print EVENLY and CLEARLY. You can score a really nice CUSTOM stamp like this for under $25:
Of course the stamp shown above is an example of an “address stamp” but you can change the text to say things related to your company. And if you like this idea, there’s plenty of different design styles to pick from:
