Online Sellers: 33 Designer Brands That Some People are OFFENDED By

Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 18th Dec 2020

If you're an online seller and wondering why some of your items might not be selling, check out this list of the Offensive Brands and Sayings.  Personally, we do not get offended by any products, but we just want resellers to know what is occurring in case they have invested in these brands or are considering investing in these items and are also concerned about the "sellability" of them:

TRIGGER WARNING:  If you get easily offended, you probably shouldn't read this blog post. Equally, you probably shouldn't be an online seller because at some point you will have to touch and sell products you don't personally like.

1. Washington Redskins or anything bearing the title "redskin"- Claims of racism in logo / name (My fav potatoes are Redskins...)

2. University of Virginia  (don't shoot the messenger)

3. Loreal - Specifically, any product that says “White” or “Whitening”, "teeth whitening", "lightening"

4. Johnson & Johnson - Any product that says “White” or “Whitening”

5. Hawaiian Punch - the little logo guy offends people (I seriously thought this dude was such a bad ass when I was a kid.  Can I confess that I sincerely thought it was a deer-man who had antlers on his head?  There's no way it was just me who thought this...)

6. H&M:  People want to cancel H&M as a whole.  Not sure if you remember this story or not, but they produced an advertisement that featured a beautiful child model wearing a hoodie that said "Coolest Money in the Jungle":

7. Eskimo Pie or anything with the word Eskimo including THE EDMONTON ESKIMOS deciding they will drop the Eskimo name. They didn’t announce the new name.  The logo shown below is deemed offensive (I thought Eskimos were actual people who live in places like Siberia...no?)

8. Big Boy Restaurants (we LOVE these here in Michigan) are changing their logo because it was offensive to some people:

Because Apparently the term "big boy" is not inclusive enough for females. They are now replacing the logo with a female.

9. Cleveland Indians - people say it’s a racist name and mascot (I'm from Michigan and our state actually has an Indian name because it was once territory of the Patawoatowmi, Sauk, Fox and Mascouten tribes, so I've never considered that using an Indian heritage name would be offensive.  If this is the case, Michigan has to rename the majority of everything here.  But it would seem that if you exclude all things "Indian", that would be discriminating...)

10. Uncle Ben's - Claims of racism in logo / name (I had no idea that this company worth around 30 BILLION is bad)

11. Colgate “Darlie”: According to the internet, the name “Darlie” translates to “black person toothpaste”

12. Geechie Boy Mill is a company in South Carolina that did not realize how offensive their name was to some. “Geechie is a dialect spoken mainly by the descendants of African-American slaves who settled on the Ogeechee river in Georgia”

13. Spic and Span (yes, the household cleaners). The use of the word “Spic(k)” is being interpreted as being a racial slur (I must be a dumb Michigander because I seriously though "Spic and Span" was a phrase that meant your house was clean.  I even Google searched it because I felt like an idiot and this is what I found:)

14. Miss Chiquita - Claims of racism in logo / name and sexualism.  (I  would really like to chat with any man on my podcast who thinks this logo is "sexy".)

15. Mutual of Omaha (Bank) has a traditional Indian feather headpiece as its logo. This upset some people:

16. Nestle Candies - some of the products they has are upsetting people. Here’s a couple of the most offensive:

  • Chicos — used in the US as a slur against people of Latin-American descent
  • Beso de Negra — in Spanish, this means “kiss from a Black woman”

17. Cream of Wheat - Claims of racism in logo / name:

18. Sambo’srestaurant chain in CA that had a logo that was very upsetting to some because a South Indian boy, was based on a controversial children’s book “The Story of Little Black Sambo”:

19. DISNEY’S SPLASH MOUNTAIN: I’m just going to copy the actual working from the CNN website that explains why this is awful:

“The ride’s theme is based on Disney’s 1946 film “Song of the South” which is said to have “stereotypical representations of Black people”... “The log flume ride — which is based on the controversial 1946 film “Song of the South”... will be rethemed to star the characters from the 2009 animated film"

20. Land O Lakes - Claims of racism in logo / name (I guess I'm racist because I always thought the lady on the package was really pretty and, growing up, I always wanted my hair to look how beautiful hers is. )

21. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows - The word “squaw” is widely considered as a racial and sexist slur towards indigenous women. (according to a Google search "what does Squaw mean:, it is difficult for me to understand how "woman" is a racist term...)

22. Thug Kitchen…. Offends actual thugs.  (.....yeeeeahhhh... this is an actual thing....CNN led the crusade to attack this business)

23. Corn Flakes - Claims of being offensive in addition racism in logo / name

24. Mrs. Butterworth's - Claims of racism in logo / name

25. Atlanta Braves - The “tomahawk chop” cheer / gesture is now considered offensive to Native Americans

26. Dixie - specifically Dixie Beer, but anything with the word “Dixie” can be connected to slavery. The “Dixie Chicks” are now just “The Chicks”. I am not sure what the grocery store Winn Dixie will do. I also have a close friend whose actual name is Dixie. I will follow up with her to find out what her plans are.

27. Jello is still on the "Sh*t List" because of Bill Cosby.  They have not yet been able to financially recover from Cosbys awful accusations.

28. ManpowerGroup — $22 billion staffing company.  The name is not inclusive enough to women.

29. Five Guys — Burger and fries chain (They should have named it "Two Guy, Two Gals and More", even though it was founded by, literally, five men)

30. Two Men and a Truck — Moving company

31. Pizza Guys — Pizza Restaurant

32. The Good Guys — Discount warehouse

33. The Termite Guy — Termite control service.
