Do Kids Items with Characters / Brand Logos Sell Best? Sell This, Not That Series

Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 17th Jun 2020

We have discussed so much incredible data in the past week and today we are continuing on! This time we will be discussing specifically “Childrens Licensed Merchandise Sales Statistics”, but first let me explain why exactly this means…

Licensed” means the merchandise features a character (Lion King, Despicable Me, Mickey Mouse, etc) or a logo (Nike, Adidas, Disney, etc) or even a sports team (Miami Dolphins, Detroit Red Wings, etc).  Basically, it features a Trademark that is owned by a company.  Here's 3 examples of Licensed merch:

Here's 3 examples of "Non-Licensed" items:

Merchandise” refers to the actual product - a shirt, blanket, toy… whatever it may be.

And obviously “Sales” means “people are buying it”.

So, what we are learning today is essentially, “Do parents care if the PJ set features the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Or are they just as happy buying a PJ set with generic animals on it?” - Interesting topic! Let’s check out the actual data (“statistics”)!!

In the graph below, LIGHT BLUE refers to “Non Licensed” merch, meaning the items do not contain famous characters, teams or logos.

DARK BLUE stands for “Licensed”, which means the items DO contain famous characters or symbols.

By looking at the graph above, specifically the LIGHT BLUE that means “Non Licensed” (no famous characters or symbols), we learn a lot of super interesting things, specifically that the ONLY TIME people really care about a famous character or team is when it comes to kids movies (makes total sense!).

Party Supplies is almost evenly divided. Also makes sense because my kids always want some kind of “theme” birthday. We have done everything from Mortal Kombat to MineCraft to Super Mario.

What I found to be most interesting is that when it comes to Clothing and accessories, only approximately ¼ (25%) of people care if it contains a famous character or symbol, so we know, for a fact, that a pink baby outfit with generic lady bugs will sell just as well, if not better than, a Disney version of this same set!

Now it's time to shop our Wholesale Kids Clothing Category!
