Alternatives to eBay & Amazon Selling: DEPOP - Liquidation Clothing WELCOMED!
Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 17th Apr 2020
If you’re looking for another alternative to eBay; since launching in 2011, Depop has grown to 13 million users in 147 countries which gives Depop 90th place on the worldwide list of marketplaces!!
Depop’s headquarters are located in London but Depop has offices in Los Angeles and New York, so you def can’t say “Depop isn’t for USA Sellers".
To compare traffic levels:
Poshmark has 42 million visitors a month
Sears comes in at 18 million.
Depop (5.8 million) and Bonanza (5.4 million) are almost tied.
Jet.com has almost 1.5 million
So although Depop isn't one of "The Big Three" (Amazon, eBay and Walmart) it annihilates Jet.com, destroys Tradsey and isn't even a close compairson to ecrater, eBid or Sell.com
DEPOP SUCCESS STORIES
Ok, before we get into these “success stories”, let’s be logical. These stories are the best-of-the-best, handpicked by Vice.com. Just like with eBay, Amazon or any other site, some people make a killing, a ton of people "do good" and a lot of people suck at it and quit. Basically, let’s assume there should be an infomercial-style disclaimer that says “results not typical” ….BUT that doesn’t mean results aren’t POSSIBLE. Anything IS possible. Hell, I am a bartender who become pregnant and out of necessity started selling online then ended up with a 4-million-dollar business 15 years later. So, poe-tay-toe, poe-tot-oh, I guess. Let’s get to these success stories:
Oliver’s Archive generated $293,759 in 2017 ($70k profit) on Depop.com
Elf Workshop averages $2,500 a month there
The Cabin has sold 500+ items for $6,000 a piece
Isabella Vrana brings in $4,000 a month
And so on. I mean, you CAN make money, just like with any other site...heck, you CAN make money selling on Craigslist, you know? It really isn’t sprocket science (I think sprocket science is so much more interesting than Rocket Science. Like, how much do YOU really know about sprockets? Rockets were so 2013.)
So, maybe you're like, "Well how do I make....let's say.... $3,000 a month on Depop?" ....
HOW TO BECOME A “TOP RATED SELLER” ON DEPOP
According to basically everyone who is anyone, the key is becoming a Top Rated Seller.
To qualify as a Top Seller, here’s what you need to do (this was taken directly from the Depop.com website on 4.13.20):
- Really look after your customers, and keep an average rating of at least 4.5 stars.
- Sell 50 or more items at an average price of $20 each month for 4 months in a row, OR sell $2,600+ worth of items for 4 months.
- Provide great service by ensuring that your buyers receive their items within an average of 10 days.
- Be a shining example of the Depop community by sticking to our guidelines, and not having any recent infringements on your account.
What a Top Seller gets:
- Supercharged support. Including an assigned account manager and prioritized responses on reports sent to our Support team through our help center.
- A blue verification tick on your Depop shop to indicate that you are a trusted seller.
- A monthly summary of your shop’s performance. You will receive information regarding: items sold, amount earned, fee paid, items listed and unique shop views.
- Be provided with access to our forum where you can discuss and learn from other members of our Top Seller community.
- Ok, so let's just Keep it Real here... there's not really any incentive at all for becoming a Top Seller on Depop besides the improved customer service and the blue check-mark on your profile that shows sellers you're a good soul who plans on shipping the $29 blouse you just sold to a lady in Idaho.
PAYMENTS FOR SALES
If you already sell on eBay, or if you are familiar with Pay Pal in general, Depop might be a good place for you because they are a Pay Pal merchant. I assume you understand how Pay Pal works.
FEES FOR SELLING ON DEPOP
Making a profile is 100% free. Listing is also totally free and there is no duration limits to listings.
You get charged when stuff sells and Depop takes 10% commission / closing cost / referral fee or whatever you would like to call it. When you sell an item, Depop will charge the 10% commission fee on the total transaction amount (including shipping costs). This charge will be taken directly from your PayPal account or the card you are using for payments before the remainder of the money you have made is paid to you.
SHIPPING
You are able to offer “free shipping” for buyers when they buy a “bundle” (meaning more than 1 item from ya).
Here’s where stuff gets different than other sites…
US sellers have two options
- Arrange your own shipping: Arrange worldwide shipping yourself
- ’Ship With Depop': Ship through Depop with USPS (Mainland USA only)
If you choose to “Ship with Depop” you will be provided essentially “flat rate postage” through Depop. Here’s what Depop’s shipping rates are (they are based on total size for the bundle or item):
- Extra-small: $3.50 (less than 4oz)
- Small: $4.50 (less than 8oz)
- Medium: $6.50 (less than 1lb)
- Large: $10.50 (less than 2lb)
- Extra-large: $14 (less than 10lb)
But like I said, if you don’t like those rates you can choose to ship on your own and still sell on Depop. Honestly though, the rates really aren’t bad. The only rate I would say is high is the “Extra Large” because you can ship this inside the USA for under $14 by reading our Ultimate Shipping Guide for Online Sellers.
DEPOP ADVICE
This Reddit post was just created last week. I thought this was really interesting:
And almost all of the comments on this Reddit thread are people who have positive experiences buying or selling on Depop https://www.reddit.com/r/Depop/comments/fv1mmh/my_absolute_1_depop_selling_tip_after_selling/ - And, as you know, nobody on Reddit hesitates to outright destroy something that was posted that they disagree with, so seeing such positive feedback regarding Depop is really great… and unique. But since we are discussing Depop Reddits, theres actually quite a bit of learning you can do from fellow Depop sellers just by reading the Reddit forums I mean, there is almost 100% positive feedback about Depop… I am truly in awe right now. Like...wow.
THE TIME HAS COME, FOR OUR RATING
We take our ratings very seriously because we know that you rely on our advice to plan your business. Plus, mosy of you buy inventory from us and we know the faster you sell, the quicker you come back to restock... sooooo....
We are going to give Depop a...
WHY WE CHOSE THIS RATING:
- Depop has really fantastic review from both buyers and sellers. This is a really big deal! Happy people = happy buyers and repeat buyers = happy sellers
- NO upfront costs! We really like sites that allow you to list completely for free and take their cut when it sells. This really helps new sellers learn how to sell and it also helps people decide if they want to commit to a platform without an upfront investment
- Depop lets buyers choose to ship on their own or participate in the Depop Shipping Program - It's nice that the choice is there instead of being forced on you
- Depop does not have crazy criteria to join
- Liquidations and used clothing is allowed and welcomed
- Depop HAS traffic. Although it is not Amazon, it is indeed bigger than many other sites
- The cell phone app is nice, functional and very well thought through
- Depop isn't a psychopath about photography. It's really hard for new sellers to learn the ropes and photography is always an added hurdle.
