What Clothing PRICES Sell Best? What Brands Do People Buy Most?

Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 11th May 2020

People often ask us “Which clothing prices sell best?” …. Which is a very interesting question!

I came across a great infographic on SaleCycle.com that does a pretty good job of showing where the general interest is . Check this out:

So let’s think about this…

Amazon takes 1st place as the “Most Used Apparel Site” (2019, because 2020 is less than half over). What brands does Amazon have? Pretty much EVERYTHING! You can find just about every type of clothing, every brand, every size and even brandless apparel on Amazon. So, technically, this specific data doesn’t help any.

Moving along, Walmart takes 2nd pace. I’m sure you have been to a Walmart, or at least visited PeopleOfWalmart.com, and noticed that they sell pretty much “Un-Branded” apparel. It’s lowest-end, cheapest-cheap stuff that costs little. Now this is valuable data! In this particular case,13% of apparel shoppers are seeking PRICE, not BRAND.

Kohls gets 3rd place… and also happens to be my husbands fav store. There’s always Kohls Cash in his wallet. Kohls is very middle-end. They do have brands like ADIDAS, NIKE and Hawk but they also carry smaller brands too. Kohls is def not as cheap as Walmart, yet not "higher end" by any means, even though you can easily find items that retail for $100 at any Kohls.

Then we see Macys take 4rd place. Macy is basically the polar opposite of Walmart. Macys has always been known for brand names, typically a more upscale atmosphere and nice-quality shopping bags.  I'm old enough to remember when Macys was "Hudsons" and you actually used to dress up to go shopping there.  Growing up, my family didn't have much money, so we would just walk through and marvel at the beautiful items they carried. My, how times have changed!

Then, surprisingly, JC Penny comes in at 5th place. Did this shock you? It really shocked me! I am not a huge JC Penny shopper BUT I insist on buying my dress shoes there because they carry Worthington, which is a fantastic quality at a fair price... they're the only designer I have found that makes the toe wide enough so your feet don't "pinch", LOL! Plus, I really like trying on shoes before I buy them. With that in mind, Worthington, Sonoma, Arizona Jeans… these aren’t “Big Brands”, yet they’re not Walmart brandless items, so JC Penny is pretty much middle-of-the-road, like Kohls.

SO, let’s stop there on the list for now and look at the results. We can’t really get data from Amazon because it’s impossible to tell what people are buying, so we will look at the remaining 4 entities:

HIGHER END: Macys = 9.6%

MIDDLE END: KOHLS: = 10.3% and JC PENNY = 8.4%. Total combined: 18.7%

LOW END: Walmart = 13%

Looking at this data in this manner, it is clear to see that the averaged-priced items are more sought-after than the cheap items or the expensive items!
