Online Sellers: How to Identify Snake Skin vs Croc vs Gator vs Reptile / Lizard Pattern

If you love listing your items accurately, here’s a super simple cheat guide you can use to distinguish if the items pattern is Snake Skin, Crocodile, Lizard or Alligator.

SNAKE SKIN

  • Tiny scales (compared to a croc or gator)
  • Super Smooth
  • NO “bumps”!!
  • Very Detailed
  • Snakes almost always have perfect patterns; the right and left are mirror images of eachother
  • The pattern of the snake is very consistent, from head to tail

Snakes can have patterns that are long and wrap around the body in a seamless type way:

LIZARD SKIN

For the most part Lizards have patterns that are “broken up”:

  • Lizards can have completely different patterns.  In some lizards the head of the lizard is completely different from the body pattern.  Crocodiles and Alligators have the same coloration throughout entire body.
  • My lizards have never had mirror-image patterns.  Although the pattern on the right and left of the lizard is similar, compared to a snake, the lizard has some "design flaws".
  • Lizards can have spiny / spiky scales

CROCODILE vs ALLIGATOR

Most people are not going to care if you call the item Croc or Gator (Unless it’s genuine skin; Real Gator skin is more expensive than Croc). But if you want to try to list your vegan friendly item correctly, here’s the easiest way to tell. The Alligator skin is shown below in RED. The Croc is BLACK:

As you will notice in the two images above, the Crocodile skin has little dots on it. This is called “IOS”. Alligators do NOT have IOS, but Crocodile does.
