Online Sellers: Clothing Sizes Explained! Girls vs Juniors vs Missy vs Womens vs Plus Sizes

Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 27th Aug 2021

If you’re new to selling online and you’re trying to figure out the differences in female clothing sizes, here you go!

GIRLS SIZES

Girls sizes are for what most people call “little girls” and generally include sizes 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 but can also include toddler sizes (2T, 3T, 4T, 5T). Most sites will also include older Girls sizes as “Girls” including sizes 10, 11, 12, 14 and size 16 / 16X. If you see an “X” after the size it is a Girls Plus Size, which means the fit is roomier for heavier Girls bodies:

YOUTH SIZES

Some wholesalers and websites will refer to older girls (approximately ages 12, 13, 14, 15 and sometimes 16) and “Youth” sizes because these older girls are not quite yet a Juniors size, yet they are not a traditional “girls” size:

Not all sites use the word “Youth”, so if you are having problems finding inventory online you should likely switch your search to “Juniors”.

JUNIORS

One common misconception is that Juniors clothing is for “kids”. Generally speaking, Juniors sizes are designed for females ages 14 - mid / early 20’s; essentially these sizes are for younger females (pre-adults) who have not fully developed their bodies yet, therefore their arms are less thick, their hips are more narrow, rib cage (bra “band” size area) is smaller and their thighs are more slender. Essentially, they have not yet “filled out” yet. Typically speaking, Juniors sizes are “odd numbers”, which are 00, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15. We recently began seeing Juniors size 17.

MISSY / MISSES / Mrs

Let me point out that most websites and wholesalers / liquidators do not use the word “Missy” because it's outdated. One of the sites that does use Missy sizing is Sears (who also owns K-mart... who has to keep closing stores due to lack of interest due to being outdated).

Missy sizes technically are the even-number sizes going from size 6 through size 18 (so, technically, “missy” sizes are 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16) however, in the past couple years sizes 18 and 20 have been added to the list.

So what this means is that size 2 is Missy, size 3 is Junior, size 4 is Missy, size 5 is Junior... YES, IT'S SO STUPID!!!!!  That's why most websites and wholesalers don't use the term Missy... its too confusing!  Because of that, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO ABANDON THE PHRASE "MISSY" because it will make locating inventory difficult. With that being said, chances are you are actually seeking “womens” items, so if you switch your keyword from Missy to Juniors you will likely find what you are seeking.

WOMENS

Womens sizes are basically the same exact thing as “Missy” / “Misses”. Use the term “Womens” instead. TIP: Avoid the misspelling of “Womans”; be sure you are typing “Womens”.

PLUS SIZE

Plus size merchandise is for women with a larger build. This is where things get a little confusing because plus size is technically also “Womens” sizing, and the actual size will often have a letter “W” after it; for example, the size will say “16W”, which means “16 Womens”. BUT Plus sizes can also be listed using the letter “X”, such as “2X”, “3X” or “4X”, however “0X” has also been added onto the plus size list within the past 5-or-so years.
