Online Buyers: Let’s Rant! The 8 Most Annoying Things Online Sellers Do

Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 14th Apr 2021

We usually use our blog to discuss everything related to online selling, so today I thought it would be fun to flip the script and rant about online sellers.  So if you're an online buyer, Enjoy ~

1.   HELLLLLLOOOOOOOO!!!! CAN ANYBODY HEAR ME!?!?

Besides not getting your order, there’s not much worse than a seller who takes forever to reply to your inquiry. Yes, we all understand “Covid” makes things slower (social distancing + less staff = slower pace), but isn’t expecting a reply within 48 hours beyond reasonable??? Nobody is asking a seller to reply within 60 seconds, but at BigBrandWholesale.com we strive to reply to all inquires within 15 minutes (7 days a week, 9am - 9pm). Of course issues can occur; if you decide to ask a company a question, but instead of emailing or calling them you choose to send a message through Instagram or by posting a comment on YouTube, it is totally possible the seller might not get a notification from that social media platform so they might not know you need assistance. The simple solution is to contact the seller DIRECTLY.

2.  OK COOL, BUT WHAT ABOUT MY QUESTION?

Copy and Paste email that doesn’t answer the question: Not only does it make you livid that it took a week to FINALLY get a reply but it makes you even more upset that the reply is some kind of generic crap that has nothing to do with your question.

Here’s a perfect example of this; I purchased a couple live fish for personal use from a family owned website. The fish arrived quick and they were mega healthy, but they simply wouldn’t calm down. After 3 weeks of these fish acting like total psychopaths (swimming back and fourth from one end of the tank to the other, non stop, 24 hours a day) I decided to email the seller and ask what size tank they were raised in, because it dawned on me that maybe these specific fish were in a massive tank and they feel trapped in my 55 gallon. Anyways, 4 days later the seller replies and says “So glad you like them!”...... I then had to say “I do like them but can you kindly answer my question regarding what size tank they were raised in?” …. GRRRRRRR!!!

3.  THANKS FOR YOUR BUSINESS, NOW FIGURE OUT DELIVERY.

Tells you to file your own insurance claim or fix your own issue.

Ok, let me start this by saying there ARE indeed issues that the buyer needs to fix, but if the buyer claims the parcel was never delivered or arrived damaged, the SELLER should be the one to file the insurance claim. For Petes sake, help your buyers out! THEY are the victims! On the other hand, if the buyer signed for the parcel then says it never arrived, they are pretty much on their own to figure it out.

4.  THIS PACKAGE IS FULL OF SH*T!

Whether your an online seller or an online buyer, you should read our blog post called 5 Order Packaging Mistakes Your Buyers HATE because this post discusses everything that really pisses buyers off, ranging from glitter bombs to Fort-Knox- style-tissue paper.

Reality is, someone just wants to carefully open their poly mailer and remove their new 3-pack of Cherry flavored Chapstick.  Nobody wants to dig through their teenage sons room to try to find their hidden kitchen scissors to then spend 7 minutes carefully cutting away Thank You Cards, stickers, tape and sparkly Easter-Bunny-Printed tissue paper layered on top of plain white tissue paper to finally excavate their $4 Preparation H cream.   It took so damn long to open your parcel that they have already developed another hemorrhoid and it's all your fault.

5. I NEED TO TELL YOU THIS... AND THIS...AND THIS TOO...

Why on earth are you sending so many friggin emails?  If you're an online seller your emails should be:

  • Order Confirmation (the instant receipt the buyer gets when they purchase)
  • IT SHIPPED + Here's your tracking info + click here to track it
  • If possible, send an email on the day it is out for delivery.  People love this!  Unfortunately, BigCommerce stores do not currently offer this feature.  Hopefully they do soon!
  • If possible, send a message stating it was delivered.  Also, BigCommerce does not yet offer this.  *fingers crossed for soon!*

PEOPLE DO NOT NEED ANYTHING ELSE!!!  It drives me utterly insane when I place an order and the next 4 emails I receive from the company are all to promote their new crap when my order hasn't even shipped yet!

Additionally I do not need you to contact me to tell me my "order status" changed to "Awaiting Shipment" or "Awaiting Fulfillment" because if it still hasn't shipped, what's the point??

6.  I'LL TAKE THE EGGS... WITH A SIDE OF SPAM

Sellers; PLEASE limit your promo emails OR offer buyers the option to choose how frequently they want to receive emails.  Most people DO want to receive emails from companies they like.  Equally, most people do NOT want to get them every darn day.  In fact, 69 percent users unsubscribe due to "too many emails."

7. YOU'RE A LITTLE "EXTRA"

People are getting a bit disgusted by wasteful packaging.  Don't believe me?  Go to YouTube and type "Amazon Packaging Fails" - sure, we all have a bit of a laugh at how stupid it is to waste a 4 foot box + 35 air pocket padding inserts + 6 feet of bubble wrap to ship someone literal bubble wrap, but in reality its wasteful and all of that extra material not only goes in the trash to become permanent landfill plastic, but it also takes up tons of room in the buyers garbage can.  Sellers; be considerate.

8.  SEEK AND YE SHALL FIND

Sellers who reply to every question with a link to their FAQs section is totally not helpful at all, especially when the question is specific, such as "Can I pay for express shipping?", "Will you be getting in more Lulu Lemon?" or "Can you wait until Friday to ship because I'm on vacation in Zimbabwe?"
