New STRIPE.com Phishing Scam Aimed at ONLINE SELLERS / Website Owners
Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 20th Mar 2021
If you own your own website or business and you use Stripe.com to process your payments, BE CAREFUL! There is a brand new phishing scam designed to trick you into clicking links and uploading your business information!
Here's an example of what the email you receive might look like:
As you can see, this email wants you to click the hidden link they provide then upload your personal information, such as utility bills, bank statements, etc.
CLEAR NOTIFICATIONS THAT THIS ISN'T LEGIT:
1. If you look at the Sender info, it is from "joanne@powerplaycareercoaching.com", NOT from Stripe.com (Stripe will ONLY ever send communications from "Stripe.com":
2. TAX I.D. Is spelled as one word:
3. STRIPE DOES NOT "PAUSE PAYMENTS"!!! If you have a Stripe account and have been successfully using it, your account will NOT "expire" or need you to update the identical info you have already provided.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET AN EMAIL FROM STRIPE THAT SEEMS SUSPECT
First, DO NOT CLICK ON THE EMAIL LINKS!!!!
Instead, open a new computer screen and go directly to the Stripe merchant login: https://dashboard.stripe.com/login
Next, login to your Stripe account. If there is any form of issue with your account you will immediately see a notice stating the problem. Chances are there are no problems at all!
If you're still not sure if the email is legit, simply Contact Stripe directly and ask: https://stripe.com/contact
If you're pretty darn sure the email you got is a phishing scam, FORWARD it to phishing@stripe.com and let them investigate it for you! After you forward the email you will receive a reply like this:
In closing, it is SUPER, MEGA IMPORTANT that you do take the time to report / forward ALL scam emails because these big companies have teams of people who DO investigate them. I don't know if we can ever stop scammers but we can absolutely have some of these awful people arrested!
