New Online Sellers: The 7 Reasons Why Other Sellers Make More Than You

Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 3rd Jun 2021

If you're feeling a little depressed or even a bit salty because you see other online sellers like Instagram's  Midwest+Thredz showing off her load of daily outgoing order parcels and you feel like you will never, ever, no-matter-how-hard-you-try be able to reach that point, here's the 7 things you're missing, in no particular order:

1. They have been  in business longer = more experience.  Remember, EVERYBODY starts at 0 sales and $0 earnings.  You are NOT alone.  Even Jeff Bezos of Amazon started out of his garage, selling books at 0 sales!  IT'S OK!!!  The reason Amazon is worth 1 TRILLION dollars is because they have been in business longer than the person who just opened their account on eBay today.  Yes, there are other reasons, however there is no other place to start than $0.  With this in mind, you have something in common with every single small business owner, millionaire and juggernaut.  (I bet you never thought of it like this, eh?!)

2. Spending their time better.  They know how to List More Items Faster and how to Ship Faster.  Remember the very first time you tried to cook a grilled cheese and it was burnt on both sides and looked like an 8th grade Science Fair specimen?  Yep, we have all been there.  And the only way you get better is by learning how NOT to do it.  I often say that I, personally, am the Christopher Columbus of Failure because I have discovered every wrong way to achiee something... BUT 15 years of incorrect ways made our company was it is when it reached year #16.  (P.S: Even at year 16 I still find better ways to do things!)

3. Have more money = more inventory.  Inventory is key.  In the world of online selling inventory is the entire game.  If your only product is a hand-sewn pink polka dot sweater for medium-side Labrador you are missing out on small size labs, full grown labs, people who want to buy a blue polka dot sweater, dogs who only wear solid colors and so on.  The more diversity you offer the more buyers you appeal to and the more sales you generate!

4. Not retail arbitraging.  Retail Arbitrage is when you drive to a store to buy something on clearance to resell.  I don't want to spend an hour on this topic so simply read our post Why Retail Arbitrage HURTS Your Online Business

5. They have experience = knowledge in product buying.  Trust me, they HAVE bought "duds" aka "crap" AKA "never, ever again".  Buying "meh" products helps you learn how to buy GREAT products.  Craziest of all; sometimes YOU think the products are AWFUL, yet they sell as soon as you list them, meanwhile other products you THINK will sell out immediately just sit.  ... this IS the life of an online seller!

6. They have upgraded to make the process faster.  Be sure to read How to List the Most in One Day and  How to Ship the Most in One Day .

7. They have learned what doesn't work.... usually by being open to learn but also by failing and learning from it .  Instead of investing time and money into dwelling on failure they move on because time IS money.   For example, the packaging style you originally planned to use will likely need to be revised.  The company you bought the supplies through will need to be changed.  Your style of listing, the photos you take, the way you reply to questions.... all of this will be revised again and again and again until you end up with a well oiled machine.
