How to Prevent a Parcel from Getting Wet (Rain / Snow)
Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 10th Sep 2021
I have written about Reddit threads a lot lately because I get so much blog post inspiration by seeing topics that I can easily provide an answer to… then I read the comments on the topic and want to bang my head on my computer desk. With that being said I am going to share with you the most simplistic, cost effective, lightning fast way to permanently prevent your customers orders from arriving wet:
ANSWER: The Poly Bag. Yep, it’s that easy. (KEEP READING, I’m going to tell you how to do it to perfection!)
Poly bags come in a dozen (maybe more) sizes. Here’s the most popular sizes:
TIPS:
To avoid your parcel arrving looking like the box shown in the image above, you want the poly bag to be on the OUTSIDE, meaning what the mail carrier touches. This means if the carrier sets it on someone's porch the plastic mailer touches the ground, NOT the cardboard box! If you put the item in a poly bag then put the bag in a box it is very possible the box will become soaked and the water will get on the item! BUT, if you put the bag on the outside of the box, the water would first have to get through the bag then soak the box…. This combination is far less likely!
You also want to use tape to seal the flap of the poly bag, even the self stick ones. Choose a nice 2” or 3” tape (we prefer 3”) to thoroughly cover the flap area, thus creating a damn near impenetrable parcel. If you don’t use tape water absolutely will get inside the flap.
Make sure your tape covers both edges of the flap. Just taping straight across is not enough because water can easily seep in the cracks of the flap.
Here at Big Brand Wholesale we actually DOUBLE LAYER our poly bags. Yep, we put one poly bag inside of another, for every single parcel. If the merchandise is shipping in a box we still put it inside of a poly mailer. Never once have we had a customer complain of wet merchandise and we have been shipping using this method for a very, very long time.
FINAL TIP:
If you don't have any poly bags you CAN rig a black trash bag or some grocery store bags if they don't have logos. The grocery store bags are nowhere near the quality needed. The trash bag CAN work if it's not a cheap Dollar Tree type bag. Another thing that can work in the event of needing to emergency ship is plastic in general such as a pool liner, tarping, painters drop cloth.... providing it is a solid color that is NOT see-through.
