I came across this interesting article that gives statistics regarding how often Americans fall for scams, and I have to admit, the data shocked me, so I figured I should share it with you.
The most common payment methods scammers prefer are:
- 38% of scammers go after credit or debit cards
- 34% of scammers attack digital wallets
- 31% of scammers request gift cards
A survey polled 2,000 Americans to discover how often they get duped and here’s what the survey found:
Almost half of the poll-takers admitted to being scammed and losing money due to the trick.
The average amount of money lost is $500! So then the survey questioned people on how exactly they ended up getting duped and this is what the survey uncovered:
- About 37 percent claim they didn’t have the time to stop and think through the scenario that the scammer was offering.
- Roughly 28 percent showed interest in an alleged reward
- Nearly 30 percent cited fearing a loss of their personal information.
- About 27 percent of respondents feared a family member/friend would lose their information.
And, after getting tricked out of money, what did the victim do?
- 73 percent of people tried to expose the scammer.
- 37 percent have played into the scam, or played stupid and talked in circles until the scammer gave up.
- 35 percent tried poking holes in the scammer’s story
- Another 23 percent actually told the scammer they were on TV for a news story to scare them off.
