Amazon & eBay ALTERNATIVE: Jet.com
Posted by Big Brand Wholesale.com on 20th Apr 2020
If you are fed up with Amazon drama and you are tired of selling on ebay, today we will be discussing yet another alternative called Jet.com
Jet was started in 2015 and quickly bought by Walmart (2016). There’s lots of reasons why you should consider selling on Jet but more importantly, it is designed to capture the millennial market; which is a market Sears, Kmart, Victorias Secret, Macys and other leading stores have totally missed out on - and look at how many stores they are now forced to close! Keep in mind that by 2025, Millennials are expected to become 75% OF THE WORKFORCE! So clearly, if you do not change your business strategy to cater to 75% of working people you, quite frankly, are going to be put out of business.
But this isn’t the case with Jet.com. In fact, you may be surprised to hear that Jet.com outperforms Amazon in many ways; specific categories, such as Health, Beauty, Baby and Pets result in more sales than Amazon! In fact, Jet.com has a higher “Average Cart Value” than Amazon as a whole too! Not to mention that Jet’s repeat buyer rate is 23%, which also is better than both eBay (17%) and Amazon too (11%)! Yes, I was equally shocked to read this. But when researched to find out why, I was able to uncover a really simple answer: today’s millennials have made it clear that they value budget over brand, bulk discounts, eco friendly packaging and premium quality as a whole (Yep, I said they want premium quality for a cheap price…. And ship it in an eco-friendly way…. fast). If you are older than a millennial (like myself), this is something we have to learn because we grew up in an era that taught us “You get what you pay for”, where we expected the items quality to match the price. We also expected a brand name to have higher quality than a no-brand BUT this is no longer the case. With advancements in technology (the access to the entire world by simply powering-on your laptop), we are able to now offer brand names at no-name prices; which is really a winning situation for Millennials, Generation X and Boomers too… and this trend will be passed along to my children, Generation Z.
So the question is, besides appealing to millenials, “HOW EXACTLY does Jet do better than Amazon in these categories?!”; the answer is because Jet aims for lowest prices, (upsells) Free Shipping and It’s kind of an innovative form of wholesale to the public; so Jet nails almost all of those categories Millennials are seeking. Let’s take a look at how this works:
BULK DISCOUNTS
Jet has a category called “The Stock Up Shop”
which is their main feature that draws in customers. In The Stock Up Shop whatever you purchase decreases in price based on the quantity you buy. For example, this (clean living, Millennial approved!) Laundry Detergent is $12.99 if I buy 1:
However, If I buy 2, the price drops to $12.76 per piece. If I buy 5 the price becomes $12.11 per piece:
AND, This particular Clean Living detergent isn’t even available on Amazon, but this one is:
As you can see, it is $18.71 if you buy 1 through Amazon Prime; obviously there is no discount on Amazon for quantity. However this same item is available on Jet for $17.99 BEFORE the quantity discount:
I know, you are now wondering “What about sellers who sell clothing, accessories or body care?” - don’t worry, I got you covered -
I ran a few searches on Jet.com for some of the brands we sell wholesale at BigBrandWholesale.com. I can say that the prices sellers are offering on Jet leaves TONS of room for profit. My only concern, based on what I see, would be that Jet.com sellers seem to be OVERPRICING.
For example, a quick search on Jet.com for “Victorias Secret” brought up items priced ABOVE full retail:
The three items shown above are indeed discontinued items, which does increase “value” to the person who is seeking that discontinued item. However, overpricing to this degree does NOT increase value to someone who just wants to buy a new body mist and is not aware that “Champagne Glow” hasn’t been made in years; all they see is that a body mist is $122 (hard pass, right?). On the other hand, this is indeed a hard-to-find scent IF you know a lot about VS, so if you are craving some Champagne Glow you just might buy this full-size, expensive AF mist off Jet.com.
I then did another Jet.com search for Victorias Secret and I changed the Results order to “Low to High”, which makes the cheapest VS merch appear first. This is what came up:
So the very, very, very cheapest VS body care products available on Jet.com are around $13. We sell our VS body care like this for $6.99 or less with Free Shipping + Loyalty Points, so if you buy through us you can make massive profit on Jet.
I then wanted to check out a different brand and see how it looks on the Buyers end when they add stuff to cart. Primarily I wanted to see if any kind of automatic discount is bought if the buyer purchases multiple items from private sellers. Here’s what happened:
I did a Jet search for Calvin Klein:
I am going to add 1 CK item to my Cart:
As you can see (below), my current total for this $46 sweater is $56. But Jet immediately “upsells” me by saying I am only $2.59 away from getting Free Shipping:
I am now going to also add the $38 CK bra to Cart:
My total for the merch is $84.81, I got Free Shipping, plus tax comes to $91.16. Jet does not apply any additional discounts to these items because they are not in “The Stock Up Shop”. BUT… YOU can set up items you have duplicates of to auto-discount when the shopper buys multiple!
ANOTHER AWESOME THING ABOUT JET.COM: ABILITY TO **NOT** RETURN EVERYTHING
At Checkout Jet offers the customer even bigger savings if they agree to “No Returns”.
AND ANOTHER REASON…
Let’s say you and another person are both selling the same, identical $25 Victorias Secret Lotion. You are the East Coat seller. The other seller is on the West Coast. If the buyer is the RED arrow who is also located in the East, YOU will get the sale because you are closer to the buyer:
This really levels the playing field for sellers who have the identical item at the identical price.
SO, HOW DO YOU SELL ON JET? WHAT ARE THE FEES?
FEES:
It is 100% free to list on Jet.com. There is outdated information on the internet saying there is a monthly account fee - this is no longer the case.
Jet.com does not charge a product listing fee either. The only fee that is charged is 8 - 15% “commission” on the products that sell. Like all other platforms, the closing fees / “Commission” / “Referral Fees” are category-based.
QUALIFICATIONS
APPROVAL PROCESS:
Like Amazon, Jet takes their sellers very seriously. If you don’t want to take the time to make “quality” listings then it really is best to stick to eBay, Bonanza or similar. With Jet, they review every single seller account submission and rumor is that approval can take a month. Eek.
To begin the application process, you first visit https://partner.jet.com/ then register.
When you register you will have to select your “Structure Type”
If you do not have an LLC or if you are just an individual selling stuff online, you are a “Sole Proprietor”. On the next page you have a bit of stuff to fill out:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Jet is now a Walmart company, if you have already applied for Walmart (and have been approved), you will be able to save a ton of time because Walmart auto-adds your applicable items to Jet. I would genuinely suggest killing two birds with one stone (Or, as PETA said "Feed two birds with One Scone") and just apply through Walmart instead.
OUR RATING:
Here's the toughest part of the article... deciding what rating to give a marketplace.
Drumroll....
I know, you're wondering why we gave it only 3 stars. Here's our reasoning:
- Out of the Top 150 marketplace websites in the WORLD, Jet.com comes in 119th place because of its traffic levels. Jet.com gets 1.4 million visitors a month, which does't even come close to competitors like Bonanza (5.4 Million), Depop (5.8 Million), SEARS (18.7 Million) or the heavy-hitters Walmart, eBay and Amazon.
- When you compare Jet.com's listings to Overstock.com listings, you can see that Overstock's listings have sold because they have quite a bit of reviews whereas Jet.com's listings have 0-1 reviews on clothing items, body care and other non-jet (private seller) merchandise.
- And finally, it is basically pointless to join Jet.com because you can apply for Walmart, which is 8th in the WORLD and gets 469 MILLION visitors a month. If you're approved for Walmart your merch will automatically appear on Jet, which really does make applying for Jet a waste of time and energy.
- On the other hand, you can't give Jet only 2-stars because it's owned by Walmart and it has only been in existence for 5 years. I expect Jet to grow substantially over the next decade.
- Additionally, having the ability to post on Walmart.com and have it auto-post to Jet is an absolute upsell.
